the southern extreme of the Cascade Range. It consists mainly of slopes
extending downward from Crater Peak, elevation 8,677 ft. The lowest
Wilderness elevation is 5,546 ft at the base of Crater Peak.
The IMPROVE site representing the Thousand Lakes Wilderness is LAVO1 (Lassen
Volcanic National Park) located near the northwest Lassen Volcanic National
Park entrance Ranger station, 25 yards southeast of the Fire Station,
elevation 5,756 ft. The site may be influenced by channeled flow in the
Manzanita Creek drainage that flows west from the National Park and
ultimately to the northern Sacramento Valley. Local wind patterns can be
seen in data from the Lassen Volcanic National Park
CASTNET site, LAV410, located
nearby.
The Thousand Lakes Wilderness Area and
Lassen Volcanic National Park, along with the
Caribou Wilderness Area are in the same
general area and share the same general topographic features. Since they are
represented by the same IMPROVE site, for meteorological characterization
reference is given to the Lassen
Volcanic National Park meteorological description page.
