Task 3:
Recommendations
North Central Lowland Plains Region
|
Based on the methodology
presented thus far, there are two tribes in the north central lowland plains region that
are not represented by an IMPROVE monitoring site. |
|
Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. SD |
Spirit
Lake Tribe, ND and SD |
|
 |
|
The nearest IMPROVE monitor
to the Spirit Lake Tribal land is approximately 230 km to the west-northwest
at Lostwood, LOST1. The Badlands IMPROVE site, BADL1, is over 500 km
to the southwest. Significant sulfur producing sources are located to
the southwest of the tribal boundary that may influence SO4 concentrations
at the tribe. Because of the distance to the nearest IMPROVE site and
the location of the sulfur source region, we recommend an IMPROVE protocol
site in eastern portion of North Dakota near the tribe. This site
would also be very useful to assess the spatial gradient of NO3 from BLMO1
towards the Dakotas. |
|
The nearest IMPROVE monitor
to the Sisselton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe is Blue Mounds IMPROVE protocol site,
BLMO1, at 152 km to the southeast. Given that there is a sharp
gradient in particulate nitrate from BLMO1 to LOST1, a site in the northeast
corner of South Dakota would be very useful. Therefore we recommend an
IMPROVE protocol site at or near the Sisselton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe. |
