December 3, 2006 Conditions |
Santa Ana winds were evident on Dec 3rd
due to very strong high pressure over the Great Basin. This caused
high winds and gusts up to around 70 mph over the mountains. In addition to
the high winds, low relative humidity in the single digits presented a
volatile situation for fire. By noon the smoke plume was already pushed out
to sea toward the southwest. |

Around 3 am on Dec. 3rd the Los Angeles
to Mojave Desert (Daggett) pressure gradient was around 9 mb. The gradient
from LAX to Bakersfield was arouind 2.8 mb. |

The map below shows the surface pressure
map at 12 UTC (4 am Pacific time) and 1000 mb wind vectors. Winds at the
surface at the fire and offshore are from the ENE. The maps below are based
on the 80-km NAM forecast model output. |

At little higher up in the
atmosphere, at 850 mb the winds are more from the east. |
