Evaluation Methodology |
The first part of the
evaluation is to compare wind measurements with those generated by the
meteorological models that were input to the HYSPLIT trajectory model. We compared radiosonde data
at several locations in the western US with the 80-km EDAS and the 191-km
FNL in Alaska. Radiosonde data was obtained from the
NOAA FSL website. |
|
We compared the 00 and 12 UTC
soundings with profiles generated using a code written by NOAA ARL to
extract vertical profiles from the meteorological data files. The code
extracts a profile of the nearest model grid cell to the user's input
latitude/longitude. We compared the two data sets at 500, 1500 and 3000
meters above ground level at the radiosonde launch site and summarized the
them graphically in windroses. Windroses were computed for each season as
well as over the year 2002. |
